SNUG VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAM
What do you do when your community has had more that 232 shootings in several years? In Yonkers, you call the YMCA.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
SNUG a community-based initiative, was created to redirect at-risk New Yorkers from a culture of violence, responding to a surge in shootings and killings in 10 New York State communities.
Following the Chicago Cease-fire Model, SNUG offers a safe environment with activities like a recording studio, basketball, open gym, and weightlifting to help young people develop skills, build relationships, and avoid violence.
The program’s primary goal is to ensure youth safety and reduce community shootings by fostering positive development and engagement in a supportive environment.
ACTIVITIES
The SNUG Program offers various activities that are designed to engage young people and help them develop skills.
- Recording Studio: The recording studio provides young people with an opportunity to explore their creativity and express themselves through music.
- Basketball: The basketball program provides young people with a healthy outlet for their energy while also teaching them about teamwork and sportsmanship.
- Open Gym: The open gym provides young people with a safe place to play sports, socialize, and have fun.
- Weightlifting: The weightlifting program provides young people with an opportunity to develop physical strength and discipline.
PROGRESS
The SNUG Program has been successfully running for over 10+ years, and we have been able to engage with a significant number of young people and provide them with a safe and supportive environment. Additionally, we have been successful in reducing the incidence of shootings in the community. Check out some of our statistics.
